From Paper to Podcast: Our AI Content Playbook

How a small, three-country team turns one research best practice into a blog post, a podcast, and more — using free and low-cost AI tools, no production budget required.

Why We Do This

Valuable research on AI for the circular economy often stays locked inside technical reports and academic papers, read by a handful of specialists and no one else. This playbook is how our team, spread across Germany, Serbia, and Moldova, turns that research into content people actually read, watch, and listen to.

The idea is simple: take one source piece, usually a blog post, and expand it into complementary formats — an AI-generated podcast (NotebookLM), a narrated or avatar-presented video (ElevenLabs, Synthesia), a newsletter feature, and a visual summary or infographic (Canva). Every format links back to the same source, so nothing gets fragmented.

It's written for content creators, researchers, and communication teams who need to reach educators, students, industry practitioners, and policymakers, each with their own preferred format, without a specialised production team or budget.

The Workflow: From Source to Multi-Format Content

Seven steps, most of them a single afternoon's work, take a research outcome from a technical report to a published, multi-format post.

1

Find & Ingest the Source

Start from a research outcome, paper, or report. Upload it to an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, or NotebookLM and ask it to extract the key findings in plain language before you write a single word.

Example prompt
Read this paper and summarize it for a general audience: (1) the problem it addresses, (2) what was actually done, (3) the three most important findings, (4) why it matters for the circular economy. Avoid jargon, and explain any technical term you have to use.
2

Draft the Blog Post as Markdown

Turn the summary into a short, structured post: a clear title, a one-paragraph hook, a handful of subheadings, and a closing that points back to the source. Writing it in Markdown first makes it easy to review, version, and later turn into a styled web page.

Example prompt
Turn this summary into a blog post of about 600–800 words, in Markdown. Use an engaging title, a short intro paragraph, 3–5 subheadings with '##', and short paragraphs of no more than four sentences. Close with a 'Why it matters' section that links back to the source. Tone: informative and accessible, written for non-specialists.
3

Human Review & Fact-Check

Read the draft against the original source, line by line. Check every number, name, and technical term: generative AI can produce text that sounds confident but is subtly wrong. This is the one step in the whole pipeline that can never be skipped.

4

Turn It Into a Podcast with NotebookLM

Upload the finished blog post, or the original paper, as a source in Google NotebookLM and generate an Audio Overview. A short custom instruction keeps the AI hosts on topic and helps them pronounce key terms correctly; then download the episode and embed it in the post.

Example prompt
Focus the discussion on [key topic]. Explain [term] in simple terms and give a concrete, real-world example. Keep the tone conversational but accurate, and do not speculate beyond what is in the source material.
5

Add Visuals with Gemini or ChatGPT

Generate a hero image or a couple of illustrative graphics with Gemini or ChatGPT's image tools. Keep a consistent style across posts, and always write a real, descriptive alt text: some of our readers rely on screen readers.

Example prompt
Create a clean, modern illustration representing [topic] for a circular-economy research blog. Style: flat and minimal, teal and dark-blue color palette, no readable text in the image.
6

Optional: A Narrated or Avatar Video

For how-to guides, tool walkthroughs, or workshop recaps, an AI-narrated or avatar-presented video (voice from ElevenLabs, presenter from Synthesia) often lands better than a podcast. Keep it to three or four minutes and script it from the same source text.

7

Build & Publish the Page

Turn the reviewed Markdown into a page that matches the site's design, add it to the blog overview, and wrap every visible string in the same translation keys used across the site so the post reads naturally in English, German, Serbian, and Romanian. Link back to the original paper, tool, or platform from every format you publish.

The Toolbox

Every tool below has a usable free tier, and none of them require production experience.

ChatGPT / Claude

Ingest papers, extract findings, and draft the blog post in Markdown.

NotebookLM

Turn a blog post or paper into an AI-generated podcast discussion in minutes.

Gemini / ChatGPT Images

Generate hero images and infographics with a consistent visual style.

ElevenLabs

AI voice narration for explainer videos and audio content.

Synthesia

AI-avatar presenters for tool walkthroughs and how-to videos.

Canva

Newsletter layouts and visual infographics, built on the same source content.

Mind Your Data Protection

Most AI tools in this playbook process your input on external servers, often outside the EU. Never upload personal data, unpublished results, or confidential partner information to a public AI service. Check your institution's data-protection policy first, and when in doubt, stick to material that is already published or fully anonymized.

Prefer to keep data inside the EU? These providers cover similar ground under European data-protection law:

Quality Control Is Non-Negotiable

  • Fact-check every number, name, and claim against the original source before publishing.
  • Have a native or fluent speaker double-check technical terms and every translated version — automated narration and translation both frequently get domain vocabulary wrong.
  • Keep a visible link from every format back to its source, whether that is a paper, a platform, or an earlier post.
  • Write a real, descriptive alt text for every image, and review auto-generated captions on videos and podcasts.
  • Disclose that content was produced with AI assistance where it is relevant to do so.

Key Success Factors

What made this practice work, and what we'd tell another team trying to replicate it.

Templates & a Common Look

Agree on shared templates and a visual style early on, so quality stays consistent even across partners with very different levels of experience.

A Simple, Regular Plan

Keep a lightweight, recurring plan for what gets produced and when, instead of relying on ad-hoc bursts of content.

Progressive Capacity Building

Start with simpler formats, a blog post or a newsletter feature, before moving on to podcasts and video.

Human Review, Always

Treat human review of AI-generated content as non-negotiable, not as optional polish.
